Crazy Day Management

When you are having an “off day” and the world feels out of control, how do you bring yourself back you? I have recently started taking a new approach to dealing with this, because being a basket-case isn’t nice to do to yourself, or anyone else that has to be around during a melt-down.

I have compiled this list of ways that I choose to cope with everyday and extraordinary life craziness.  They are pretty obvious and very traditional ways to calm down and relax. Think of this as a friendly reminder in case you forgotten! Hopefully you will find some of these ideas useful for your own outta-control moments.

1.    Take a bubble bath. Fill the tub with nice bubbly bubbles and get in it! I highly recommend doing this after nobody else needs you for the day. (i.e. kids that need to be fed, diaper changes, homework help, spouses/partners, washer and dryers etc.) On second thought, ya know what? The hell with it! Get in the tub with a pair of ear plugs and LOCK THE DOOR! If you need to get away quickly this is a great escape! Trust me, the world WILL NOT fall apart without you for a half hour and as a bonus, you’re clean!

2.    Go for a walk or run. Pound the pavement. If you are walking, use long and heavy steps. It will make you feel like you are releasing something. Exercise is a natural “feel good” activity, so this should help. For added distraction, if you have an MP3 player, iPod, or even a Walkman, pop in the ear buds and listen to some of your favorite tracks. The goal here is to feel better, so don’t go back home until you do or until you wear a hole in your sneakers. Whichever comes first.

3.    Read. You know you have a book just lying around somewhere waiting to be read. Don’t pick a “self-help” book or anything educational. They can be depressing when you just want mindless reading. Imagine that you are the main character. Get lost in their story. Chances are that what they are going through is different and maybe worse. This will make you thankful for your life and hopefully you will realise that a happy ending to this day can be yours if you just turn the page of your own story.

4.    Lock yourself in a closet and call your bestie! Or your sister, aunt, niece, daughter, mother, or any other trusting woman in your life. Vent your heart out and get some advice. Take it, or leave it, and then listen to her rant. Cause chances are, she’s got some craziness happening too and your phone call may be be just what SHE needed to help her get through the day. Hang up feeling better, because you know you helped someone else get through a crazy moment.

5.    Clean something. And when I say clean, I mean scrub the heck out of it. I recommend floors. Get down on all fours and scrub, scrub, scrub. Problems? What problems? The only problem you might have is getting back up off the floor after an hour on your hands and knees! The shining floor can be motivating because with a little hard work and some elbow grease you will see that a dirty floor (or a crazy day) can become shiny again!

6.    Do something creative. Politely excuse yourself from the chaos and lock yourself in your happy place. (I'm all about locks because I have a 2 year old). Turn on a tune, and create. There is absolutely nothing better then turning raw, emotional energy, into something beautiful. This works with most creative hobbies including but not limited to: Jewelry making, knitting, crochet, embroidery, painting, sketching, origami, song writing, poem writing, novel writing, and BLOG WRITING (hahaha) etc. This will make you feel better because you will be so thankful for the ability to do what you love, when you want. Some people don't have this luxury.

7.    And if none of these sound appealing to you because the day or situation is just too overwhelming and crazy, just have a good cry! (Crying is also permitted and encouraged during all other techniques). But have you ever notice that during a good cry fest, around the 20 minute mark, when you can’t see and your nose ceases to function; your mind forces you to come up with a brilliant way to get over it? It's like you physically know that this can't last forever so your body nudges you towards resolution. A plan will be formed; your tears will dry up, you will blow your nose and hopefully be able to carry on with the day until the next unmanageable moment.

Use one or a few of these suggestions until you see the light at the end of the crazy tunnel.  I have done 3 of the 7 today and I am feeling much better!!  J

I have come to the conclusion that DISTRACTION is the key. I don’t know if this is a healthiest way to go about this, but it has been working great for me lately. It gives me time to think, and calm down by removing myself from the crazy. I get a chance to work it out, without freaking out!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful craziness-free day! I found this quote this morning and it WILL be printed and posted somewhere for me to see whenever I need it! I thought you might like it too.

"The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers."            -Author Unknown

Much Crazy Love,

Kate
